Ezra Stone was Mayor Tom Kane's Chief of Staff. He betrayed Kane when he felt that the Mayor was solely concerned with his legacy. Kane had him murdered in response.

Biography[]

Season 1[]

Ezra Stone is Kane's loyal and trusted employee who is present during many of Kane's high-level meetings. Kane calls him "Stoney". He has many connections to make Kane's obstacles "go away".

Season 1 opens with on Kane's redevelopment project for the city's O'Hare Airport being halted when an unpopular cemetery relocation project uncovers ancient Native American paintings. Kane is furious when the construction firm owner Moco Ruiz announces the news on television instead of communicating through his alderman Lalo Mata. Kane hauls Mata over the coals for Moco's mistake, seizing him by the ear and berating him to listen. The message is received and Mata ensures that shit rolls down hill by punishing Ruiz severely. Kane meets with Native Americans and pledges to preserve the find in a museum.

Reporter Sam Miller is tipped off about Kane seeing neurologist Dr. Ella Harris and attempts to question her. He gets nothing but their meeting is noticed by Stone's people, who have been tailing Miller. Stone knows that Kane is ill but is not sure of the specifics. Kane authorizes a gentle warning to be delivered to Dr. Harris. Stone's man uses a neuromuscular blocker to paralyze the doctor as she goes to pick up her son from a little league game and delivers a chilling reminder of her oath, terrifying her. Kane is troubled by worsening tremors and uses Stone's contacts to obtain anti-Parkinsonian medication illegally.[1]

Ezra had noticed Kane's increasingly unusual behavior, and at one point privately assesses that Kane is making decisions to preserve his power instead of to serve the city. Ezra could no longer justify doing dirty deals for Kane and felt since he helped put Kane in power, that he was responsible to help oust him. He did not reveal this until after Kane found out that he used a fake name of "Rosebud" (another 'Citizen Kane' parallel), to leak damning documents from Kane's father-in-law's archive to the Sentinel reporter, Sam Miller.

Season 2[]

Kane sees Stone in hallucinations caused by his Lewy Body Dementia. Seeing Stone causes him to stagger at a public event, moments before his wife Meredith Kane is shot.[2]
