Emma's father tries to call her. She avoids his calls, engrossing herself in work as a rector at her church and volunteering at a free medical clinic. However, she relapses to substance abuse after meeting a sweet young man involved in drug dealing named Darius Morrison. Towards the end of Season 1, she is caught up in a sweep of drug busts throughout the city, which Mayor Kane had ordered to help boost his political reputation. She is subsequently jailed and defrocked from her church position, with the free clinic in the church being shut down. Emma maintains she was merely doing what she had to to help poor residents of Chicago get the medical care they needed.
Season 2 Edit
Upset with her parents, Emma resists attempts by her father to move her to the hospital to visit her mother, Meredith, after she is shot at O'Hare's International. Her incarceration at a detention center proves harsh, as her fellow inmates show animosity towards her for being the daughter of the mayor. Her sentence is later commuted to house arrest. She struggles with attempts to stay sober while being further and further estranged from Darius, who with time begins to turn aggressive.
Before long, Emma discovers that her disabled grandfather, the former mayor Rutledge, has possibly been artificially placed into a stupor by a powerful drug, bulbocaprazine. She secretly takes him off the regimen which results in his agitation in which he falls on his head and goes into a coma. She then accuses her mother of having put him in the stupor for the past 20 years and strikes her.
Ian Todd attempt to calm her down and in the midst of the stress, the two have sex, unknowing that Darius is watched through the window, furious.
Due to her parole officer having been bribed, she is able to get off her charges with a misdemeanor and is now free. She learns that it was Darius, not Ian, who made the bribe. She finds Darius in the city, his car smashed, and very high on heroin, asking that she leave him alone.
